Television as a tutor

Besides delivering information to the viewer education is one of the primary functions of television. Although creation of educational TV programs is somewhat less profitable than making entertainment shows like MTV music videos or anything else, it is still regarded as the primary destination of television in general. Various types of educational programs and popular science films are being made and even special TV channels are especially created for broadcasting such programs. Among them are such channels as the Discovery Channel or National Geographic that are well known all around the world for their quality documentaries about history, science, culture, nature etc. These channels are a subscription television networks, it means you have to buy a subscription to be able to watch them (if you have a satellite antenna) or if your cable television provider has already bought such subscription.
Educational television makes life both easier and more interesting. It tells you how the nature is functioning, how the world was created, how things are working, how buildings are made and what not. Knowing all this was impossible just a couple of decades ago when television was something just as expensive and luxurious as buying a yacht today. All people had to do to learn things was to read books that lacked one important feature – they couldn't show processes in action. All you could do was to imagine. And now we are able to see and hear everything what's going on in the world without even having to leave our home.
